Day 1
Aberdeen

Experience the richness of Aberdeen's proud history and culture ? from the sound of residents' traditional Doric accent to the sights of glittering granite buildings lining the city's streets. Explore the cobbled roads and historic university buildings of Old Aberdeen, then take a stroll along the nearby sandy beach and watch for dolphins in the busy harbour. Afterward, find your way to the quaint fishing quarter of Footdee, and lose yourself among its tiny cottages and colourful gardens.

Kollafjordur (Faroe Islands)

Bobbing in the frothing North Atlantic, the remote, 18-piece Faroes are a picturesque patchwork of emerald pastures, dotted with sheep, gaily-hued cottages and tree-free moors. The sea is never more than three miles distant in this proud, assured land, where deep-rooted traditions remain strong. The coasts boast deep fjords, steep cliffs and looming headlands. Explore these fjords by wooden sloop or sail the coast by schooner. Walk the fells and brave the unpredictable weather to puffin spot.

Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen is a great jumping-off point for experiencing the humbling power of the Arctic islands. Glaciers, mountains and primitive wildlife are the main attractions here. Be warned, though: Those polar bears look cuddly enough, but they are extremely dangerous and don't take kindly to gawking tourists.

The exotic capital of Finland is a consummate city of the sea, built along a series of peninsulas and islands jutting along the Gulf of Finland. Neoclassical schemes of the early 1800's and modernist Finnish styles of the mid 20th century combine to make it a sprawling masterpiece, outfitted with sea-bordered parks, picturesque boulevards and waterside walkways.
